3 Public Speaking Tips from Pros

“The right word may be effective, but no word was ever as effective as a rightly timed pause.”

When I’m speaking at a sales meeting, convention or seminar, I’m always scanning the audience, reading their mood, evaluating their attitude, and assessing what’s going through their minds. I can instantly identify those individuals who appear to be engaged and prepared to receive the message versus those individuals who have come with skeptical expectations about what they are going to hear and probably excuses for what they expect of themselves. I can even see the difference in their posture: their facial expressions are clear and evident. Sometimes it’s as simple as the difference between the individual who is sitting erect, pad and pen in hand versus the one who’s sitting back with his arms folded over his chest. This second group of individuals is guilty of having a defensive attitude, or for lack of a better phrase the “I just don’t want to be here” syndrome.

The Sales Assassin must be mentally prepared and conditioned to engage and persuade their audience.

3 Public Speaking Tips from Pros

• “If you can’t write your message in a sentence, you can’t say it in an hour.” ~ Dianna Booher

• “Best way to conquer stage fright is to know what you’re talking about.” ~ Michael H. Mescan

• “The right word may be effective, but no word was ever as effective as a rightly timed pause.” ~ Mark Twain

I always ask my audiences to close their eyes for a moment and think about their greatest, most inspiring teacher, coach or boss. Then I ask them to write down three words that best describe them. I am always amazed when I poll the room and ask how many people wrote some form of the word “passion” and the word “dedication”.
